Eine Erzählung mit Musik
König Picus ist jung und schön. Seine bevorzugte Tätigkeit ist die Jagd zu Pferde. Er liebt seine Frau, die Nymphe Canens, die beste Sängerin weit und breit.
Auf der Jagd begegnet er der Zauberin Circe. Sie verliebt sich in ihn und wirbt um seine Hand.
Er weist sie ab.
Zur Strafe verwandelt Circe ihn in einen Specht und sein Gefolge in mannigfaches Getier .
Die Nymphe-Sängerin Canens löst sich vor Trauer über den Verlust des Picus durch ihr Lamento in den Äther auf.
